Isotopes have or are similar in chemical properties due to two main reasons, they are as follows:
- They obtain to have the same number of electrons in outer most shell (valance electrons).
- They have the same electronic configuration.
Test it out, get isotopes of carbon for example, understand the definition of an isotope and then work out how many electrons in outer most shell (by writing the electronic configuration), it will then be all clear.
