There is no proof that eating onions, or any other foods, such as garlic or bananas, will repel mosquitoes from you. ... While onion and other allium species do have insect repellent properties, onion plants or sprays made from sliced onion will not effectively repel mosquitoes.

Answer:

Female mosquitoes feed on your blood to help their eggs, which they typically lay in standing water, develop. When mosquitoes bite, they release their saliva into the area, and many people have an allergic reaction to this saliva, which leads to itchy red bumps. Mosquitoes may also harbor viruses, such as equine encephalitis and West Nile virus. Repellents are used to make your body less attractive to mosquitoes, so they’re less likely to bite
