I think that the children were much matured then what the typical children are supposed to be...
when the storm hit the boat, the narrator's daughter got a big bump and a black eye but instead of crying she managed her injury just by herself same with the son he was way too afraid but motivated every other crewmen to not be afraid which shows that the kids were ready to take any challenge that would hover over their heads
