let x be the number which subtracted from each term in ratio.

 \frac{19 - x}{21 - x}  =  \frac{7}{8}

152 - 8x = 147 - 7x

152 - 147 =  - 7x + 8x

x = 5

\textbf{Question =  > }

What number must be subtracted from each term of the ratio 19 : 21 to make it 7 : 8 ?

\textbf{Answer =  > }

As given ;

→ What number should we subtract from the ratio 19 : 21 so, that it makes 7 : 8.

→ It means that we have to find out a number which should be subtracted from 19 : 21 to make it in the ratio 7 : 8.

Ratio that make 7 : 8 are :- 14 : 16, 21 : 24, 28 : 32 etc.

The nearest one is “14 : 16”

So,

The number which should be subtracted= (19 - 14) and (21 - 16)

Condition is that if both the results are equal then only we can subtract them as told in question.

First result ;

= (19 - 14)

= 5

Second result ;

= (21 - 16)

= 5.

As 5 = 5, they can be subtracted.

\textbf{So, your answer is :- 5.}
