It actually depends on the situation. If we are given the base value, then we use tan [opposite side(usually the height)/adjacent side(usually the base)].
Whereas of we are given the value of the HYPOTENUSE, we can use sin [opposite side(usually the height)/hypotenuse].
Whereas of we are given the value of the HYPOTENUSE, we can use sin [opposite side(usually the height)/hypotenuse].
