Do we need to learn the common names of organic compounds for class 12 board exam? Isn't the IUPAC names enough? Will they be asked?

Yes, common names of important organic compounds is very much needed for class 12 board exam along with their IUPAC names. eg. blue vitriol, washing soda, baking soda, green vitriol, etc. all these are required for both objective and subjective questions and even in near future for competitive exams.
