Yes ,Portia is definitely the most important character in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice . I would even say that it is Portia who is the hero of story ,for, it is she who saves the day .

Portia ,disguised as a young lawyer outwits everyone including Shylock ,who wished to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's heart .But Portia's wittiness saved Antonio's life when she said that Shylock's bond only mentioned a pound of flesh and so not a single drop of blood should fall from his body . By saving Antonio's life and teaching a lesson of mercy to Shylock ,Portia indeed performs a heroic act .
