Answer:-

Yes, this story is definitely funny. Not only is the way in which the three friends pack for their trip quite mirthful, but the way the author narrates all the incidents is also entertaining.

The first humorous element is that he offered to pack, George and Harris leaves the whole matter to him. Consequently, he has to do talking through his real intentions was to boss the job.

The second humorous element is that George placed the butter on the chair and Harris sat on it and it struck at his back. When they searched it for packing it was missing. They walk and walk round the room. At last, George it at Harris's back.

The third humorous element is that Montmorency squirms in where he is not wanted. He wants somebody stumble over him and curse him steadily for an hour. He pretends that the lemons were rats.

The story ‘Packing ’by Jerome K.Jerome is full of humorous elements:

  1. The author’s tone- The author says one thing but means another. It is comical.
  2. Small things become a big deal- The toothbrush gets a lot of importance, as does the exact wake-up time and the sleeping arrangement (they toss a coin for who gets which bed).
  3. Physical movement- There is a lot of clumsy movement in the story, like jumping around looking for the butter, Montmorency causing a riot and Harris throwing a pan at Montmorency.
  4. Laughing at one another- George and Harris laughed at Jerome while he packed. Jerome laughed at them while they were packing and Harris and Jerome were planning to have a good laugh at George when he fell into the bath the next morning.

Here is some information you can use:

  1. The attitude of the author Jerome- In the first paragraph itself he says that he knows a lot about packing. It is quite funny how he thinks so highly of himself, and yet a little later he doesn’t remember if he packed his toothbrush or not.
  2. The difference between what he says and what he means- Jerome himself said that he would pack, and yet he was annoyed when the other two let him pack. What he meant was to make them pack while he acted like a boss giving them instructions.
  3. The toothbrush packing incidents- Jerome gets terribly anxious about packing his toothbrush. A toothbrush is enough to wake him up ‘in a cold perspiration’.
  4. Packing, unpacking, repacking- Jerome packed everything, then undid the bag to put in the boots, then emptied out everything to look for his toothbrush.
  5. George and Harris’ breaking and misplacing things- Both of them are awful at packing and break a cup, smash the pies, squash a tomato, misplace the butter and struggle with getting it into and out of the teapot.
  6. Montmorency’s contribution- The dog was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and got a leg full of jam, and jumped at lemons, causing even more confusion.
  7. George’s falling asleep- The one who was to wake up the others, fell asleep before even knowing what time they were to get up.
  8. Placement of the bath- Harris and Jerome played a prank and put the bath next to George so that he would fall right into it.
