Caste systems have been found all over the globe, in different cultural settings. UNICEF estimated that identification and discrimination based on caste affected 250 million people throughout the world. For example, since the 16th century in colonial Spain castas referred to a method of stratifying people based on race, ethnicity, and social status.
In India there were four varnas or castes. They were mainly based on occupation. They were:
1. The Brahmins who occupied the highest class in society. They were learned men.
2. The Kshatriyas formed the second strata of society. They were warriors.
3. The Vaishyas indulged in trade and agriculture.
4. The Shudras performed menial tasks. They formed the lowest class of society.
