Explanation:

you garden you know some plants like full sun, and others like full shade. If you plant a sun loving plant in a shady location it will not thrive. May not even survive. Trees are the same. Different species of trees have different sun or shade requirements. It is called shade tolerance, or just tolerance. In a dense canopy of trees little sunshine may reach the ground. Sun loving trees and shrubs will not grow underneath the canopy. Cut some of the trees to let sun through the canopy and you stimulate the growth of the sun loving trees and shrubs underneath.

Trees get diseases and insect attacks. Left unchecked the disease or insects will spread. Most forest diseases and insects attack a single species or closely related species, and will not attack others. In a mixed species forest that has been attacked, you remove all the trees of the target species and leave the others. In a single species forest you must remove all of them, plus a buffer around the infection site to make sure you removed all the infection. Then replant with a totally different species not target by the pathogen.

Different wildlife need different forest densities. Some wildlife, like deer and elk, prefer low density forests with lots of openings. Others, like marten and the spotted owl, need thick high density forests. So it depends what wildlife species you are trying to enhance.

Each parcel of ground has a finite number of trees it can support. Too many trees and there is not enough water or soil nutrients to support them all. They are all competing with each other, and all of them suffer as a result. They will all be suppressed and not grow well. Cut the weaker trees and the remaining ones will grow stronger, taller, and larger.

Research has shown a watershed will produce the most water with a specific number of trees. Too many trees and less snow and rain reach the ground. Too few trees the sun evaporates the rain and snow before it percolates into the soil. Maintain the right tree density (actually, canopy closure) and the watershed will produce the maximum amount of water for downstream communities.

Forests burn. Removing some of the trees will reduce the fire intensity the next time a fire occurs.

Foresters look at all these factors when deciding where, how, and when to harvest trees. Sometimes clearcutting is appropriate, sometimes leaving the forest untouched for another ten or twenty years is appropriate. It depends upon the current stand forest condition and what the long term objectives are.
