Answer:

Met distance be LCM(3,5,18) = 90 km

Upstream speed (US) = 90/5 = 18 kmph

Downstream speed (DS) = 90/3 = 30 kmph

Speed of boat = (DS + US)/2 = (30+18)/2 = 24

Speed of current = (US - DS)/2 = (30 - 18)/2

= 6 kmph.

If Boat speed= 24,

river speed = 6 kmph

If Boat speed= 18,

river speed = 6/24 x 18 = 4.50 kmph

Answer:

Let the speed of boat in still water be x km/hr and the distance be y km.

Speed in downstream = (x+8) km/hr

Speed in upstream (x−8) km/hr

According to the question,

x+8y = 3 ....(1)

x−8y=24..(2)

On dividing equation (1) by (2),

x+8x−8=24×2=48

⇒7x−10.5=6x+9

⇒x=10.5+9

=19.5km/hr
