Jerome feels that he suffers from all the possible diseases except housemaid's knee. When he illustrates his feelings to the doctor, he realizes that he basically suffers from stress and hypochondria. He thereby issues him a strange prescription which actually doesn't prescribe any medicine, but just instructs the narrator not to think much about the things he doesn't have much knowledge about and take enough rest. He basically undermines Jerome's inclination to indulge in self-examination and thinking that he possesses symptoms of every possible disease.
