It was obviously a horrible thing. In-fact I would term it as one of the biggest mistake of Modern history for the residents of the Asian subcontinent. To support my views I shall write what all that has happened due to partition and would not have happened had Indian not been Partitioned.
In the riots which preceded the partition in the Punjab Province, it is believed that between 200,000 and 2,000,000 people were killed in the retributive genocide between the religions. UNHCR estimates 14 million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims were displaced during the partition; it was the largest mass migration in human history. About 2.23 million people were missing in the chaos and riots caused by Jinnah’s direct action day. Approximately 80,000 women were abducted with thousands never found and thousand form the one to be found refused to go back to their respective countries due to the fear of society and/or committed suicides.
As this was not enough immediately after the partition with millions of refugees starving without food, without a roof on their head on both the sides Pakistan launched a offensive against India in Kashmir and both the countries fought a war over Kashmir which not only killed many more but also deteriorated the economic condition of both the countries which was already in a very bad shape. By the time war was done both the countries lost another (estimated) 7500 men and had 17500 wounded far more displaced with splitting Kashmir into 2 and further cementing the hatred and animosity for years to come and paving the way for internal disturbance on both the sides of Kashmir.
Then came the war of 1965 where India was forced into a war with the Operation Gibraltar of Pakistan. By the time this war was over 7000 more had died with thousands wounded and displaced.

Yes because if partition is not there than it will lead to future communal tensions and further violence can take place. That is why the partition of India and Pakistan that happened in the year 1947 was necessary.
