The underlying idea of protecting our heritage is to pass it to our children. We keep our heritage alive so that it can be experienced by generations to come. The converse is also true: we hand our heritage to our children so as to keep it alive.

So, to protect the heritage, we must secure and safeguard them over the years to come. There are two main activities to protecting the heritage:

Identification and selection, which involves determining what is considered as heritage and requires conservation. This requires the research, listing, documentation and similar activities.

Conservation, which involves action towards maintaining, preserving, and restoring the selected heritage. This is done by applying legal protection framework, elimination of threats, conduction restoration activities and monitoring future threats.

Such efforts are largely undertaken by government bodies, non-governmental organisations or an other concerned agencies and seldom by local communities or an individual. Other than letting these organisations do their business, let’s try to know what me and you can do to protect our heritage.

To protect the tangible:

Any kind of tangible heritage must be preserved first. It is not necessary to restore the object/building/place to the pristine glory of the time when it first came but in cases, keep it as it is found. If it is showing the signs of deterioration, the elements of deterioration should be immediately eliminated.

Built Heritage needs constant attention. Don’t scribble your name on them. Don’t pollute the vicinity. Don’t build your polluting factory next to them. Don’t steal parts from these. Lastly, but most importantly, please don’t be a religious extremist and destroy a remarkable piece of heritage that you don’t associate well with.

Natural Heritage. Don’t pollute these. Don’t mess with the ecosystem.

Movable Heritage and Archives are smaller than other kinds of heritage yet equally important. As much as you can, keep them in their place. More specifically, in their original context. Don’t touch them so as to reduce the risk of wear and damage. Don’t steal these. Don’t buy these if stolen. Don’t plunder museums. Visit museums to know more about them.

To protect the intangible:

Intangible heritage is particularly difficult to protect as it is only experienced and can’t be kept in sheltered in a place to guard it. More than an individual or an organisation, it requires efforts by entire community. This is because intangible heritage gives us a sense of identity. Theres is only one thing that we can do to protect it: use them as often as you can.

Food traditions: Eat more, share more

Language: Speak your language to preserve your ethno-linguistic identity. Speaking your language wouldn’t make you uncivilised or poorly-educated. Not speaking would certainly kill it.

Cultural practices: Dance, if it is your tradition. Pray, if it is one. Learn the art of your father id and his father before him even if you are never gonna use it. Engage in cultural activities every time you get a chance.

Fairs and festivals: They are colourful and they are fun. But imagine how much is lost if an annual festival that attracts people from outside the community does not take place this year?

Folklores: Tell them to your children. Tell them to the world.

There are many other kinds of intangible heritage which need similar efforts. Trust me, it is good to skip a movie for once and watch a puppet show.

Some other ways in which an individual can do to help:

Volunteer: Different organisations involved in preserving the heritage, including UNESCO, require more human resources than they have. One may join the UNESCO interning or volunteeringprograms.

Spread Awareness: Inarguably, it is absolutely necessary to create an awareness of the importance of preserving these invaluable heritage.

Donate: Heritage protection bodies are mostly underfunded as they are not the prime agenda of any government. Monetary donations are the most direct way to support the cause.

Remember, heritage once lost is lost forever.
