In the commencement of act 4, the Duke feels sorry for Antonio, and he openly terms Shylock as an ‘INHUMAN WRETCH, WHO IS DEVOID FROM SHOWING MERCY'. This is obviously not what one expects from an impartial court proceeding.

As the scene progresses, Duke of Venice indirectly supports the merchant and Bassanio. In fact, he also thanks Portia for saving Antonio's life.

Owing to these factors, real justice is not done to Shylock, no doubt his plea for 'bloddy, starved and ravenous'.

Shylock was persued by Portia into claiming his crime. Still, Antonio lossened his punishment but it was still too much for such a crime. He deserved much less punishment than he got
