Answer:

I don't think if Sri Lanka had adopted Tamil as national language instead of Sinhala there would not have ethnic conflict. Following points can be given in support of this answer:

  • The majority of Sri Lankans were ethnic Sinhalese, a group of Indo-European peoples who lived in 500 BC. had immigrated to the island from northern India. The Sinhalese had contacts with the Tamils who settled in the southern part of the Indian subcontinent. A major migration of  Tamils took place between the 7th and 11thcenturies AD.
  • When the British began to rule the country in 1815, the approximate population of the Sinhalese was about 3 million and that of the Tamils 300,000. In addition to ethnic affiliation, the two groups also differed in their religious affiliation. The Sinhalese were predominantly Buddhist and the Tamils were predominantly Hindu. The British ruled  Sri Lanka from 1815  to 1948, during which time they brought almost a million Tamils to work on the island nation's coffee, tea and rubber plantations.
  • The British also established good educational and other infrastructure in Sri Lanka's northern part of the country, where Tamils were in the majority. They also preferred Tamils in public service. All of this naturally caused unrest among the Sinhalese.
  • After gaining independence the new government initiated many laws discriminating against Tamils. Sinhala was made the sole official language, effectively removing Tamils from government service.
  • A law was also passed that simply prohibited Indian Tamils from obtaining citizenship.Tamils began demanding equal rights at home. His demands were just and his methods peaceful.
  • However, as ethnic tensions increased in the country, successive Sinhalese governments did nothing to provide equal rights and opportunities for the Tamil people. They were even subjected to sectarian violence.
