Surely a very interesting question. When you talk about British Records, we have to understand what 'kind' of records we are talking about. This is because, some records, which are made Public are severely distorted in order to portray a particular story to help the national cause.
We can find accurate information from such public records, but not always.
On the other hand, we might find far more truth in many inter-intelligence or inter-governmental reports, where important units of the government are co-coordinating and passing out information. These are the best places to find accurate information.
However, even here, there have been a few instances where e.g. a General in an army stationed in another country, did not report back properly, either to exaggerate the danger they are in or downplay a mistake they made.
This can happen in any government not just the British
