This question is actually a part of Malayalam based story written by the writer named Vailkom Mohammad Basheer.

All of his writings are sensitive enough to drive the emotions of people. In this story too, he had tried to touch human element and its different sides.

In this story it was shown that the  residents who had been living in the hilly areas as properly described here, were in extreme poverty and hence to meet their needs, their only concern was money.

They were robbers, pick pocketers etc by profession. The protagonist was also hit by it when his pocket was picked.

Just like every other day, that day he skipped his breakfast to save money and had whole some lunch at a restaurant after which he realized that his purse was picked.

So he would not be able to pay any money to the restaurant keeper.

However the restaurant keeper threatened to gouge his eyes off and strip him altogether for this, and insulted him before all. So he overreacted.
