Parents love their children and do what is best for their welfare.
Portia was attractive, rich and the only daughter of a wealthy man. So her father had set up a little contest (lottery) which involved three caskets to ensure that his little princess married the right man.
Portia was not happy about this and felt that she was not independent of her dad's control, even though he was dead. She was smart and cunning. She obeyed her father's will, at the same time improvised the situation in such a way that Bassanio, whom she wanted to marry, chose the correct casket.
