Question –

Do you write letter to your grandfather regularly?

Answer –

Is the letter written to your grandfather by you regularly?

Explanation:

The question is a interrogative sentence.

So, In passive voice Do, does and did are changed into is, are and were respectively.

now, let's discuss about both the voices :-

Active voice

● Active voices are natural and preferable to use.

● The verb’s emphasis is always on the subject.

● Active voices are simple and effective,  so communication can be done easily.

Passive voice-

● Passive voice is preferred:

⇒ When we don’t know the doer of the action

⇒When the action is more important that the doer.

⇒In formal writing, newspaper, scientific reports etc.

●  The emphasis of the verb is on the object.

● Passive verbs are indirect, so they may be less effective.

Rules of conversion from active to passive:-

● The position of the object and the subject of the verb are interchanged. The object in the active voice becomes subject in passive voice and subject becomes object in passive voice.

● the preposition ‘by’ is used before the subject in the verb in active voice.

● The verb in the active voice is hanged to a suitable auxiliary + past participle form of the verb. The changes will also depend on the tense of the verb in active voice and the number of the noun and pronoun.

● Transitive verb (verbs that do not take an object) cannot be expressed in passive voice.

● Di-transitive verb (verbs that have two objects) can have two passive forms.

Example:

Active - Clara bought a new car.

passive - A new car was bought by Clara
