Today’s summary story is from R K Narayan’s short story named Doctor’s Word.The story is about a doctor precisely Dr. Raman. People considered something ominous in his association. People initially never come to him for his reputation of being a doctor of patients last phase. Patients considered doctor’s word as final verdict. One thing about Dr. Raman was he did not believe in mincing words.
But What will be his attitude for his dearest friend Gopal?…….which gives the plot of the story.
Gopal and Dr.Raman are friends from childhood over forty years. It was friendship standing untouched by changing times and circumstances.
One morning he saw Gopal’s son in his chamber, upon asking he said Gopal is ill. Dr.Raman came at afternoon straight from his clinic after his tight schedule. Gopal was ill for over a month and was motionless on his bed. Dr.Raman gave him an injection,observed for an hour and left the house saying he will be back soon. Hence within quarter of an hour he was present with a nurse and an assistant, declaring he need to operate Gopal. Gopal’s wife sank down unable to bear the strain.
Finally at 8 in the evening patient opened his eyes, pulse rate improved, everyone in the house was in relief and joy and showed gratitude to Dr. Raman, but he remained evasive. Then he went up to the lady and said don’t get excited. Everyone in his house become silent and bewildered for that.
Gopal become panicky and asked what was the matter,how long he would last, in that case he need to sign his will to save his family from goons. Dr. Raman went to his car and thought deeply about the situation. Furthermore if the will is to be signed then it should be in next two hours or never, but that would crush the slightest chance of the survival of the patient. So he decided to fake his words to save a life as he is renowned for that. He came back and said not to worry you are improving, sleep peacefully.
After that he left Gopal’s house at Lawley extension to his hospital and ordered his assistant that the patient might collapse any time soon be ready for that.
He was tensed and not sure of Gopal’s survival. Next morning he came back at Gopal’s house, gazing him from his car. He checked his pulse and miraculously it was sound. He declared he would live long but it certainly puzzled him how he survive the attack.
