The policy of Doctrine of Lapse was introduced by Lord Dalhousie in the year 1848.

It was intoduced as an answer to question of succession of Hindu rulers.

This policy was for the condition when any Indian King or Ruler of a province didn't have any real heir.

If any Ruler of a state died without any real heir to rule over the province then that state or province reverted or lapsed to the sovereign.

If any king had adopted a male heir, then the son got the property of the King but not the province to rule over.

The British by this policy annexed the States of Satara, Jaipur, Sambhalpur, Bahat, Udaipur, Jhansi and Nagpur.

The annexation of Karauli by the policy of lapse was dissallowed by the Court of Directors.
