Anne's feeling about living in an annexe constantly fluctuated. Anne realised that she and her family were very lucky to have the secret Annexe as a place to hide. She valued the kindness and generosity of her father's non-Jewish friends who risked their lives to provide them with food and shelter. However Anne often complaint about the miserable physical and emotional conditions at the annex. They had to remain quiet during the day. The Confinement disturb her she had to deal with the physical and emotional torture that she was undergoing in the Annexe. She missed being able to see nature and the sky. Moreover she had to deal with clashing personalities and leave in the constant fear of being discovered.

Most of all she said lonely since she had no companions besides Peter in the Annexe in whom she could confide.

Still Anne compared her deprived freedom with Jewish friends and family members who had been arrested and sent to concentration camps, she was extremely thankful to be still alive.
