One of the attributes of living in a hermetically sealed aluminum can (the International Space Station) that is 400 km above the Earth’s surface is that you don’t get exposed to people with the flu.

Once onboard the ISS, although the crew may get sick, it isn’t really feasible that they will catch an infectious disease. The key point is to ensure that the crew are not sick when we launch them into space.

To accomplish this, the crew are put into a period of quarantine before launch. At L-10 (10 days before launch) the crew are given thorough medical exams to ensure they are not currently infected with anything. From that point onward, access to the crew is restricted. As an instructor, if I needed access to the crew during that period, I would also have to have a medical exam and then wear a badge that indicated I was safe. Everyone that comes near the crew during that period will have to undergo an exam.

HOLA

SOMETIMES DUE TO CHANGES IN ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS THEY MAY FALL ILL

Space agencies, such as NASA, are extremely cautious about any illnesses before they send astronauts into space. ... However, despite such rigorous tests, astronauts have gotten sick in the past. Apollo 7's Wally Schirra (pictured above) came down with a cold in the middle of his mission.
