If a CNG tank has a leak or is compromised (ie, dramatically pierced) and exposed to a spark/flame/other ignition source, even then, the tank may not explode, but the gas will burn up, along with everything around it. So, yes it's possible for a CNG tank to explode, but very unlikely.
