No, it does not play a role in determining sex of a new born baby ,because the females have two same X chromosome and males have X and Y so its the father who plays a role in determination of the gender of the baby.
If the X chromosome from the mother fuses the X chromosome from father then the child is female and if the Y chromosome from the father fuses with the X chromosome of the mother then the new born child will be boy.

No, maternal gene combination does not determine the gender of a baby.
Reason :
It is because the sex chromosome present in the female body is same, that is, XX chromosome. Whereas, in male body the sex chromosome present is XY chromosome.
So, during cross over, when one X chromosome of female and Y chromosome of male body fuses, it results in the formation of a baby boy.
And when the chromosome X of female fuses with the chromosome Y of male, then it produces a girl baby.
It is clear that the male partner is responsible for determining the gender of the progeny because they different alleles in a sex chromosome.
