Does Iron rust in distilled water?

Actually you know, Iron gets rusted when exposed to moisture(water vapor) and oxygen.


gokulchief: but iron gets rusted when it is kept in impure waters so water vapour is not always necessary

We know that rusting is the reaction between iron and oxygen. Distilled water also has the same formula as the impure water- 'H2O' which includes oxygen.

I've also read, distilled water can readily absorb oxygen from the atmosphere when compared to normal tap water. This helps in rusting.

Yes, rusting of iron takes place in distilled water also, provided the system is open.
