Mass and energy are the same thing in the sense that every bit of mass is an energy.

For example:
A certain 220 pound rock has a mass of 100 kg. This 100 kg is the sum of a few energies. The nuclear energy equals about 98 kg, the individual particles, quarks and leptons, have about 2 kg of energy coming from the Higgs field, with a tiny bit more coming from thermal and electromagnetic energy.

The Context
The word "mass" is very much like the word "kinetic energy" in that while both are energy, each can be seen as a subdivision of the total energy and each has its appropriate context.
