Magnesium has a slight reaction with cold water. When a coil of magnesium (a very clean one), is dipped in cold water, then it gets covered in hydrogen bubbles, which float it to the surface. It forms Magnesium Hydroxide is formed in a very thin layer on the magnesium, which stops the reaction. The protective layer is the cause for it's gentle reaction in cold water.

It do react...... With cold water... However, the reaction is very slow for naked eyes.... Where as on reaction with hot water.... It forms magnesium hydroxide.... Which ias an exothermic reaction..... And because of exothermic.. It reacts slowly with cold water
