The United Nations is an organization of representatives from countries all over the world organized to keep peace in the world. Though the United Nations Charter does not mention the word 'democracy' the opening word of the Charter, "We the Peoples", reflect the fundamental principle of democracy, that the will of the people is the source of legitimacy.

In the past seven decades the UN has done more to support and strengthen democracy around the world than any other global organization. It has fostered good governance, monitored elections, supported civil society to strengthen democratic institutions and accountability, ensured self determination in decolonized countries and assisted in drafting new constitutions in nations post conflict.

So democracy is one of the universal and indivisible core values and principles of the United Nations. It is based on the freely expressed will of people and closely linked to the rule of law and exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
