Answer:

Amphoteric nature of a compound means that it can act as both-acid and base. many metals such as copper, zinc, tin, lead, aluminium, and beryllium form amphoteric oxides or hydroxides.

Such metallic oxides react with acids as well as base to produce salt and water. Examples of Amphoteric oxides are aluminium oxide and zinc oxide.

ANSWER

Amphoteric nature of water is represented by following chemical reactions.

(1) Water as a base:

H 2 O(l)+H 2 S(g)⇌H 3 O + (aq)+H(aq)

(2) Water as an acid:

H 2 O(l)+NH 3 (aq)⇌OH − +NH 4+

(3) Self ionization of water in which water simultaneous acts as acid and base.

2H 2 O→H 3 O +OH
