Answer:

What Are The Three Rs?

Reduce

Reducing waste means finding ways to use less materials and energy in order to minimize waste and consume fewer natural resources.

According to CalRecycle.gov, the website for California’s Department of Resources, Recycling, and Recovery, waste reduction is the preferred approach to waste management. Using more of existing products and resources (i.e., reducing waste) means that fewer new products are created, resulting in lower waste management costs.

Some examples are:

Repairing vs. discarding

Canceling unnecessary mail

Not using disposable plates or utensils at home

Avoiding buying plastic water bottles

Not overbuying perishables at the grocery store (meal planning can help with avoiding wasted food).

Buy in bulk when possible (less packaging). Reward companies that use less packaging with their products.

Meal Planning. Whether you’re planning on a sheet of paper or using an application like Plan To Eat, meal planning can help you reduce the amount of food you throw away.

Reuse

“Reusing” refers to using an item again, whether for its original purpose or a new one. This is the second “R” in the hierarchy because with little or no processing, reusing items can help keep waste out of waste systems.

Some examples include:

Using a washable rag to clean your house instead of paper towels

Donating old clothes or household items

Buying second-hand

Using your old bedding for your pet’s bed

Using glass jars for food storage

Saving plastic containers to hold homemade natural cleaners such our all-purpose house cleaner

Reusing a foaming soap dispenser for your own homemade version of foaming hand soap which is SUPER easy to make!

Use reusable shopping bags or totes instead of plastic.

Buy reusable produce bags instead of using the plastic ones in the stores.

Buy a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.

Recycle

According to the EPA website, “Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products.”

Sometimes it’s hard to see how throwing a cardboard package or glass bottle into the recycling bin can make that big of a difference. However, the following data from the EPA that shows just how big of a difference it can make:

10 plastic bottles can save enough energy to power a laptop for more than 25 hours

Recycling 1 ton of office paper can save the energy equivalent of consuming 322 gallons of gasoline

Recycling one ton of aluminum cans conserves more than 152 million BTUs, which is the equivalent of 1,024 gallons of gas or 21 barrels of oil.

What Are Some Benefits Of Reducing, Reusing, And Recycling?

Obviously, the Three Rs help the planet but just how does doing your part help?

Saves Energy

It takes energy to manufacture new products. Reusing items and reducing consumption also reduces demand.

Saves Money (You Might Receive A Tax Benefit As Well)

Some items you donate may be eligible for tax deductions. Be sure to check the IRS website or with your accountant before attempting to deduct anything.

Helps The Less Fortunate Find Goods They May Need (Such As Clothing And Furniture)

Thrift stores and other donation stations can help those who can’t afford to buy products at full retail find what they need at a reduced cost.

Helps Reduce Pollution Caused By HarvestingNew Raw Materials

Not only does harvesting new raw materials cause pollution but it also depletes our natural resources. We need to make sure we leave our planet in a good place for future generations.

Saves Space In Landfills

We sometimes forget (or don’t even think about) the fact that our landfill space is limited. Landfills aren’t designed to break down waste, they only store it.

Garbage in a landfill does decompose, it does so very slowly.

While we aren’t necessarily in “crises” mode when it comes to landfill space, it’s important that we not put ourselves or future generations in that position.

I hope this has provided you with some insight into what you can do to help save our planet! Remember, even the SMALLEST changes you make can help

Speech on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for Children

Welcome everyone and greetings for a good day ahead. Today I am going to bother you a little bit by speaking on the topic ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’. And I expect patience and co-operation from your end.

Every day we do things which generate waste. Be it drinking a bottle of water or eating a banana….waste is generated. From simple to simple forms of work. Even the electricity that we are using every day is generating tons and tons of waste products.

Even the moment that I am talking in microphone right now, even this act amount to a lot of waste. Hence this huge amount of waste needs disposal otherwise it will collect in tremendous amounts and create problems like- diseases, unhygienic and low aesthetic values. Hence waste build up should be avoided.

But with such high rate waste production, it is getting increasingly difficult to dispose off. Waste is getting collected in the dumping yards where it should be disposed off.

The rate of waste production is higher than the disposal rate. Hence an immediate effort to utilize the waste products is what is needed.

This is where the terms ‘reduce’, ‘reuse’, ‘recycle’ kicks in. These are common terms to be heard in modern industry today. They form a part of sustainable architecture.

‘Reduce’ means to lessen in quantity the amount of waste generated. ‘Reuse’ means to use an already used product which is in suitably good condition.

‘Recycle’ means to make new items out of the old items and put them to good use all over again. That is using the waste products only to make new items out of it. This has the following advantages-

The waste gets disposed off

New items are produced which can be used

No harmful side effects or wastes generated.

There is no build up of harmful waste

It is a constructive method

Hence there are so many advantages of recycling and using waste products.

Many people have, in the past, tried to develop this habit of recycling. Even now constant efforts are being made to keep building constructive items out of waste.

I will be listing a few examples of the items and efforts given at creating something out of waste, both inside India and outside India. To start with my list at the top comes-

Rock garden Chandigarh, India– rock garden was one of the earliest efforts at building something out of scrap or waste material. It is also known as Nek Chand’s rock garden after its founder Nek Chand, a government official who started the garden secretly in his spare time in 1957.

Today it spreads over an area of 40 acres (161874.25 m²). It is completely built of industrial and home waste and thrown-away items.

Plastic roads– recently efforts are being made to develop roads made of plastic materials. The man behind this thought is the ‘Plastic Man’ of India, Prof Rajagopalan Vasudevan, Professor of Chemistry at Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai.

Tyres – Nowadays, with the advent of various technologies, vehicular tyres can be recycled and made into hot melt asphalt, primarily used for making crumb rubber modified asphalt pavement. Every year numerous tyres are disposed and are not put to any productive use.

Electronics – In todays, world, due to modernization and population growth, labour is cheap, and so is the manufactured goods, especially electronic items.

This, coupled with an overall increase in the purchasing power of the people has resulted in accumulation of huge quantities of electronic waste.

Today, if any appliance malfunctions, a person is more likely to throw it in the dump yard and replace it with a new one. This not only saves time but also saves the hassle of repairing.

However, this practice leads to a tremendously huge quantity of electronic waste each year which might have been prevented from forming in the first place.

However, now, in the wake of the idea of recycling, several companies salvage these old and malfunctioning electronic items and refurbish them and sell them back in the market at a reduced price with a warranty.

This aims at reducing the tones of electronic waste that is generated each year.

To conclude, I would say that the world that we live in today is our home; It is our mother. To keep it healthy and safe, we would go to any extent, then why not go to such extents to save our own planet?

Ask yourselves if you have ever thrown a plastic packet on road; ask yourselves if you have ever spit outside; ask yourselves if you have ever dumped garbage improperly.

If the answer to all these questions is ‘yes’, then it is cent percent sure that you have taken this world for granted, and its high time that we start caring for it before it answers us back with an apocalypse.

Thank you!
