Anne appreciated and respected Mr Kleiman and Mr Kugler for taking great risk and helping them out in their time of need. Mr Kleiman used to lend books to Margot and Peter and every other week he would bring books for Anne written for girls of her age. Anne was grateful to him for this thoughtfulness. Mr Kleiman was a reassuring figure for the people in the annex and their link to the outside world. He was also suffering from cancer and Anne was sorry for this fact. Mr Kleiman was the bearer of news for them but Anne was sad for him because he was suffering from this terminal disease. He liked by all in the annex, unfailingly cheerful, amazingly brave even though he was always sick and in pain, could not eat or walk much.  Anne's mother observed that when Mr Kleiman entered a room, the sun began to shine. Mr Kugler too was extremely concerned about their safety and welfare, he was quite protective about them. He always found time to spend with them even though he was up to his neck.Mr. Kugler would make Anne happy every Monday by bringing her a copy of Cinema & Theater magazine. What touched Anne was Mr Kugler and Mr Kleiman's thoughtfulness, getting gifts for them, thinking about the constraints of a life of confinement, entertaining them with their company. They were tireless in their objective of keeping the annex residents safe, so selfless in their act bearing the enormous responsibility of the eight of them. It was a stressful responsibility but they would not refrain from taking good care of the families. They had their own worries but not for a moment could they forget that their freedom which they took for granted was something that was not available to the annex residents anymore.
