Cells of this tissue have a central large vacuole and a peripherally located nucleus. Parenchyma has loosely arranged cells and serves as food storage tissue. The cells of the parenchyma are turgid that help in maintaining shape and firmness of the plant body. The intercellular spaces allow for gaseous exchange for the metabolically active parenchyma cells. Certain waste products gum, tannin, resins are also stored in parenchyma.

The bulk of a substance is said to be Parenchyma.

In animals, parenchyma includes the functional components of an organ. In plants, parenchyma is the ground tissue of nonwoody structures.

Parenchyma mainly specialized to perform the functions during photosynthesis, in storage, or in transport. Parenchyma is fundamental to vascular tissue, where it presents a path of exchange for materials within and among the xylem and the phloem.
