Latent Heat:
- Latent heat is the heat energy that must be supplied to a substance in order to change its state.
- The temperature is not raised (or increased) by latent heat. However, in order to alter a substance's state, latent heat must constantly be supplied.
- When a substance changes states, the latent heat we give is utilized in overcoming the forces of attraction between the substance's particles. The temperature of a substance does not increase during a change in the state because latent heat does not increase the kinetic energy of the substance's particles.
- There are two forms of latent heat:
- Latent heat of fusion (solid to liquid change) - The amount of energy in joules needed to turn one kilogramme of a solid into liquid at its melting point without causing a change in temperature is known as the latent heat of fusion (or melting).
- Latent heat of vaporisation (liquid to gas change) - The amount of heat in joules needed to turn 1 kilogramme of a liquid (at its boiling point) into a vapour or gas without causing a change in temperature is known as the latent heat of vaporisation.
- The experimental setup allows us to transfer steam at a given temperature into a calorimeter with a known mass of water. After the steam is introduced into the calorimeter, the mass of the condensed steam is equal to the rise in the mass of water in the calorimeter.
