Draw line AB of 9 cm.

With the centre A draw an arc of radius more than half of AB.

With same radius draw an arc with the centre B cutting the previously drawn arc.

Both the arcs intersect at point C.

Now join AC and BC.

ABC is the required triangle.

You can measure that AC = BC.

The constructed figure is attached.

Given:

  • Draw a line segment AB=9 cm.

To find:

  • Using a pair of compass find the point C such that AC=BC.

Solution:

Concept to be used: Draw perpendicular bisector of line.

Steps of construction:

  1. Draw line AB of 9 cm with the help of pencil and scale.
  2. Put the compass at A, measure a radius more than half length of AB and make an arc in the direction of positive y- axis as well as in negative y-axis.
  3. Repeat step 2 from point B.
  4. Both the arcs met at a point, draw a line while joining these points.
  5. The line PQ intersects line AB at C.
  6. It is just halfway, i.e. AC=BC.

Verification:

Measure both segments AB.

It is clear that,

AC= 4.5 cm

and BC= 4.5 cm

Thus,

AC=BC

Thus,

Construction and verification has been done.
