Given : a line segment of length 4 cm

To Find : obtain a line segment of length 3 centimeter

Solution:

Step 1 :  Draw a line segment AB =  4 cm  using ruler

Step 2 : Draw an acute angle CAB   using compass

Step 3 :  Take 4 points at equal Distance at AC from A using suitable compass width

Step 4 :  Join  4th point with B

Step 5 : Draw a line parallel to line drawn in previous step passing through 3rd point and intersecting AB at  D

AD = 3 cm

Another method :

Step 1 :  Draw a line segment AB =  4 cm  using ruler

Step 2 : Using suitable compass width Draw arcs on both sides of AB taking A as center

Step 3 :  Keeping compass width same and taking B as center draw arcs such that it it intersects arc drawn earlier at X & Y

Step 4 : Join XY intersecting AB at M

Step 5 : Using suitable compass width Draw arcs on both sides of MB taking M as center

Step 6 :  Keeping compass width same and taking B as center draw arcs such that it it intersects arc drawn earlier at P & Q

Step 7 : Join PQ intersecting MB at D

AD = 3 cm
