Draw a ray diagram for a compound
microscope. Derive an expression for the magnifying power when the final image is formed at the least distance of distinct vision. State the expression for the magnifying power when the image is formed at infinity. Why is the focal length of the objective lens of a compound microscope kept quite small?

Compound microscope

Explanation:

Please refer to the attached picture for the ray diagram of a compound microscope.

When the final image is formed at the least distance of distinct vision, magnifying power  is:

m = -vo/uo (1+ D/fe)

The image will be at infinity if ue = fe

So m = -vo/uo. D/fe

So the magnifying power of the lens will increase if the focal length of the objective lens is small.
