tRNA or transfer ribonucleic acid is a type of RNA used to decode the mRNA (messenger RNA) into the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide chain.
Hairpin or clover leaf model represents the secondary structure of tRNA.
It contains:
- Amino acid acceptor arm: It is present at 3' end of tRNA and generally consists of CCA sequence. Amino acid joins with OH of A in CCA.
- Ribosomal binding site: It is also known as T-loop or TΨC loop due to the presence of sequence thymine, pseudouridine (Ψ), and cytosine.
- D loop or DHU loop due to the presence of dihydrouracil. This loop makes the recognition site for enzyme aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase.
- Anti-codon site: It contains complementary sequence to codon of mRNA.
The whole structure is stabilized by hydrogen bonds between base pairs as shown in the figure attached.
