Lets see the conjugation of ethene molecule:

According to valance bond theory, two atoms forms covlent bond through overlapping valance atomic orbitals,each of them contains one unpaired electrons.

In ethene ,each hydrogen has one unpaired elecron and each carbon atom is sp² hybridised. two carbon atoms forms a sigma bond by  overlapping of two sp² orbitals which  forms sp²-sp² sigma bond. the unhybridised  p orbital on carbon forms pi bond .]This is called pi bonding.
