Stomata (stoma in singular) are tiny pores present on the epidermis of the leaves, stems, and few other organs of the plants. Stomata help the plants in facilitating gaseous exchange.

The borders of the stomata pores have specialized parenchyma cells, also called as guard cells, which help in regulating the stomatal opening size.

The guard cells have cytoplasmic lining and a central vacuole. The cytoplasm is made up of a single nucleolus and many chloroplasts. The chloroplasts do not possess the RUBISCO enzyme, therefore they perform poor photosynthesis.

The Guard cells are surrounded by subsidiary cells, also known as accessory cells which are modified epidermal cells and they support the movement of the guard cells.
