Food enters through mouth. There are 3 Salivary glands in our mouth. They produce saliva which has Salivary amilase(enzyme) in it. Saliva gets mixed with the food and converts starch into maltose. The food passes through oesophagus where peristalsis occurs which is the wave of constrictions to push the food along. The food enters stomach which secretes gastric juice containing hcl and pepsin. Pepsin is activated by hcl. Stomach churns the food. Then the food is passed on to small intestine which receives the bile juice that contains sodium bicarbonate making the acidic content of the food alkaline. It also reduces the tension of the fats and break them into tiny droplets. Small intestine also receives pancreatic juice produced by pancreas. It has 3 enzymes- amylapsin digests starch into maltose. Trypsin digests proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. Steapsin splits emulsified fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Small intestine also secretes intestinal juice which contains erepsin to convert remaining peptides into amino acids, maltase to digest maltose into glucose, lactase to digest lactose into glucose and galactose, sucrase to convert sucrose into glucose and fructose, lipase to digest fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Then the remaining portion of food gets transferred to large intestine where the water is absorbed and the remaining undigested material is stored until it is removed from the body through excretion.
