Explanation:

At first the electronic configuration of both the atoms of sodium will be 2,8,1 and similarly the electronic configuration of oxygen atom will be 2,6. After their covalent bonding, the valence shell of all these atoms is valanced. Sodium atom's valency will be 2,8 since they lose their electron whereas oxygen's atom electronic configuration will also be 2,8 since it gains 2 electrons.
