Reaction of ethyne with oxygen and air

  • For the electron-dot-structure of ethyne, kindly refer the given attachment.

Reaction of ethyne with oxygen:

  • When ethyne is made to react with oxygen it leads to the formation of carbon dioxide and water as the product.
  • The obtained product is collectively called as oxy-acetylene flame and supports welding due to high temperature.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction as follows:

2C_2H_2+7O_2\rightarrow4CO_2+6H_2O

Reaction of ethyne with air:

  • The reaction between ethyne and air is called incomplete combustion because in the presence of air ethyne is not completely burnt.
  • Due to this, the reaction produces a flame of very low temperature which is not suitable for welding.
  • Hence due to incomplete combustion of ethyne in the presence of air, this mixture cannot be used for welding purposes.
