Even before the opening up of the economy, Chennai (Madras) was the center of manufacturing of auto components. It was home to Ashok Leyland, the country's second largest trucks manufacturer, to Enfield which made mobikes for the military, and a small car manufacturer called Standard Motors. But the real strength was in making components and parts for other manufacturers across the country including Tata trucks, Hindustan Motors and Premier Automobiles.

It lost its lead when Maruti set up its base in Gurgaon, followed by Hero for its bikes. It regained its importance when Ford, Hyundai and BMW chose to set up there.

With the change in manufacturing management and the adoption of just-in-time supplies, vendors have to necessarily set up factories next to vehicle manufacturers. India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki (and Honda) have factories around Delhi. So do the largest 2-wheeler manufacturers like Hero and Honda. That makes it a neck and neck race between Chennai and Delhi as India's automobile manufacturing center.
