Steps to draw an electron dot structure for Ethanol is as follows:

1.  First, find the number of valence electrons of Ethanol one by one and all of them.

For C = 4×2 = 8, H = 1×6 = 6, O = 6,

Total = 8+6+6 = 20 → {equation 1}

2. Next find the octet state of each atom and add all of them together.

For C = 8×2 = 16, H = 2×6 = 12, O = 8,

Total = 16+12+8 = 36 → {equation 2}

3. Now subtract equation 2 from 1 to get the number of bonding electrons.

⇒ 36-20 = 16 electrons. → {equation 3}

4. Find the number of bonding pairs of the elctrons.

Number of bonding pairs = 16/2 = 8 bonding pairs.

5. If we have bonding pair, then we should find the non-bonding pairs also, therefore subtracting equation 3 from 1 we get lone pairs.

20-16 = 4 non-bonding electrons = 2 lone pairs.

6. draw the electron dot or lewis dot structure from steps 4 and 5.
