1. First, find the number of valence electrons of Ethanol one by one and all of them.

2. Next find the octet state of each atom and add all of them together.
For C = 8×2 = 16, H = 2×6 = 12, O = 8,
Total = 16+12+8 = 36 → {equation 2}
3. Now subtract equation 2 from 1 to get the number of bonding electrons.
⇒ 36-20 = 16 electrons. → {equation 3}
4. Find the number of bonding pairs of the elctrons.
Number of bonding pairs = 16/2 = 8 bonding pairs.
5. If we have bonding pair, then we should find the non-bonding pairs also, therefore subtracting equation 3 from 1 we get lone pairs.
