Thomson's plum pudding model was given by J.J Thomson in 1904 and explains two properties of atom those are:-

  • Electrons are negatively charged particles and
  • atom has no net charge and hence is electrically neutral.

The plum pudding model has electrons surrounded by volume of positive charge like negatively charged plums embedded in positively charged pudding.

Features of this model are:-

  1. Each negatively charged electron is paired with positively charged particle.
  2. Negatively charged electrons are orbited a central region of positive charge having same magnitude as  total charge of electron so atom as whole is electrically neutral.
