During vernal and autumnal equinox, the sun is directly over the equator at noon. At this point, the duration of day and night are almost equal i.e., 12 hours each, as the earth's axis is almost straight, with relation to the sun.

The summer solstice is when the axis of the earth tilts most, towards the sun. Therefore during summer solstice sun is at the highest. It happens when the sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees North of equator).

The winter solstice has the shortest day and happens when the sun is right on top of Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees South of equator).
