Given : y = -1 , y = 3 and 4x - y = 5 and y - axis

To find : area of the quadrilateral formed by the lines and Y axis.....

Solution:

y = -1    y = 3

Y axis.....   x = 0

Hence two vertex = (0, - 1)  & (0 , 3)

y = -1    y = 3      4x - y = 5

=> ( 1 , - 1 )    ,   (2 , 3)

Shape formed is  a trapezium

With height = 4   ( 3 -(-1) = 4)

and two parallel sides  are  of length 2  &  1

Area of trapezium  = (1/2) (2 + 1)  * 4

= 6  sq units

area of the quadrilateral formed by the lines and Y axis..... = 6  sq units

Step-by-step explanation:

y= -1, 4x-(-1)=5

4x+1=5

4x=5-1

4x=4

therefore, x= 4/4= 1

y=3, 4x-3=5

4x=5+3

4x=8

therefore, x= 8/4= 2

x= 1 , 2

y= -1 , 3

area \: of \: trapezium=  \frac{1}{2} (b1 + b2)h \\ b1 = 3 \\ b2 =  1 \\ h = 3 \\  =  \frac{1}{2} (3  + 1) \times 3 \\  =  \frac{1}{2}  \times 4 \times 3 \\  =2 \times  3=6 \\  the \: area \: of \: trapezium \:is  \: 6 \:   units
