The construction and working of an A.C. generator.
Explanation:
Construction:
An AC generator contains a rectangular coil marked as ABCD in the above diagram. This coil is rotated faster when required between the N-pole and S-pole of a strong horseshoe-type permanent magnet, marked as M. A large number of turns using an insulated copper wire are used to make the coil. Then, the two circular slip rings R1 and R2 are connected to the two ends A and D of the coil. Another two fixed pieces of carbon known as brushes, B1 and B2 are kept in contact with them while the slip rings continue to rotate. So, now through the slip rings, the current produced in the rotating coil can be tapped into the carbon brushes. Lastly, the galvanometer is connected to the outer ends of the carbon brushes to show the flow of current in an external circuit.
Working:
- Let us consider the coil, ABCD is kept in a horizontal position and rotated in the anticlockwise direction.
- One side AB of the coil moves downward direction while the other side CD moves in an upward direction.
- Due to this, an induced current is formed at both sides that flow in the direction of BADC using Fleming’s Right-hand rule.
- Now, the induced current flows from brush B1 to B2 in the external circuit, in the first half rotation.
- Sides AB and CD will interchange their positions after half a revolution. So, the side AB starts moving in an upward direction while CD starts moving in a downward direction.
- Hence, as a result of which, the induced current’s direction is reversed and starts to flow in the direction CDAB.
- Therefore, the current flows from brush B2 to B1 in the external circuit.
